About Us

When you become a MEMBER of The Produce Box, you aren't just buying produce from a delivery company. You’re “connected to” and “a part of” a community of families that want to change our local food systems and our local economy for the better. We are moms, dads and even kids (helping put the newsletters in the boxes). And we are especially proud of the fact that we buy ONLY from local farms, and do not ship in from other states or countries. We don't "warehouse"  the produce either. The farmers bring it to us, we sort it into boxes for you, and send it out VERY QUICKLY, usually coming in one afternoon and delivered the next morning.

Basically, we’re a community of farm families, growing fresh, local and delicious fruits and veggies. We’re a community of women (and a few men) and their families who coordinate getting that produce to you as quickly as possible. And of course, there’s the families we serve: committed to doing what they can to support local growers and producers, knowing that ultimately, the responsibility for preserving our local farms and the environment around us lies with us all.

2011 was our 4th season of bringing fresh local produce to Triangle residents and we are even more committed to:

1. Getting lots of farm-fresh, field grown produce into the local food system.
2. Making it easy, convenient and affordable.
3. Paying a "sustainable" price to the farms we work with for their best products, not the lowest price we can get.
4. Helping local farmers reduce waste by having them “pick to order” instead of hoping to sell what they have
5. Using more than one farm from more than one NC county to provide the most variety and best quality fruits and vegetables the state has to offer. We have over 25 farm-partners this year!

We’ve made a few improvements on the traditional CSA model:

• No upfront fees: most CSA’s ask for $400-$500 in advance for the coming season. With us, you pay by credit card on a weekly basis and can suspend service anytime, temporarily or permanently
• Smaller seasonal fee: only $18 per year to cover the cost of boxes for the season and containers inside.
• No long term commitments: you can skip a week when you need to and choose different boxes and add-ons when you like.
• Fruit only boxes and boxes with "less produce" for those weeks when the harvests are a bit overwhelming
• Produce is delivered to your door instead of you coming to a “pick up point” at a certain time.

We believe these small changes help everyone: the farms, our organization, and our members, to get the freshest possible fruits and veggies at the lowest possible price.
