Rooted in family connections...
(a note from Courtney Tellefsen, our Founder)
2007: I was a STAY AT HOME mom with two children under five, and joined a farm membership program with a friend where we picked up produce from one farmer in a nearby parking lot. It just wasn't a good fit for my family..I would miss pick up, forget about pickup, etc. And I never seemed to get to the Farmers Market, either! The kids were cranky, or sleepy, or whiny...it just seemed to be more trouble than it was worth, sometimes.
2008:I thought..if it could be easier for families to have fresh local produce for their families each week, more families would participate. So I began delivering produce boxes to my friends and neighbors in Quail Hollow (Raleigh), with my 2 and 4 year old in tow.
2012: In just a few short years, TPB has grown from a business working with one farmer to one supporting more than 35 farmers across the state. And from one STAY AT HOME mom to many more moms, dads and even kids helping families in the Triangle, Wilmington and the Piedmont Triad eat healthier.
We're proud of what we do
At The Produce Box, we deliver locally grown , farm-fresh produce to your door every week during our North Carolina growing season, usually mid-April to mid-November.
- We support our neighbors. We work with North Carolina farms ONLY, and don't ship in products from other states or countries.
- We support our community. We contribute a portion of our box price to support efforts that bring fresh, local vegetables to food-insecure areas in Wake, Durham and Orange counties...we've committed to donating $20,000 to them this year. We're happy to partner with Wake Enterprises and other organizations who help us employ members of the community that might otherwise have a hard time finding work.
- We support our farmers. We pay a sustainable price to our partners, because the first definition of sustainability for farming is being able to provide for your family. And sometimes, more than one family on a farm. We also contribute a portion of our enrollment fees to our farm-partners each year.....helping them to purchase much-needed farm equipment, repair tractors, build greenhouses and buy seeds before the season starts.
Join us and become part of The Produce Box "community of families" who enjoy home delivered fresh fruits and vegetables, eat healthier each week and support our farm partners.
You won't find fresher veggies unless you grow them yourself - guaranteed!
Our farm-partners harvest their vegetables the day before we receive it. In contrast, produce in the grocery store goes to the distributor or wholesaler, then to the supermarket warehouse, before it ever makes it to the produce department of your store. If you care about quality and nutrition, freshness matters. The longer that fruit or vegetable stays on the vine or in the ground, the better.
Wouldn't you rather have a peach that ripened on the tree rather than one that ripened on the truck on its way from Florida? Or California?
The Produce Box is here to serve you in Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Wilmington, Chapel Hill, Cary, Wake Forest, Apex, Burlington, Garner, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina, Morrisville, Garner, Clayton, Hillsborough, Carrboro, Mebane and Youngsville.
