Every so often, a Produce Box member writes in with a question along the lines of:

“Why should I buy this from you when I can get it for $3 cheaper at my local Whole Foods?”

It’s a fair question, and it gets straight to the heart of how the grocery system actually works.

As we step into 2026, more and more people are quietly asking a bigger version of that same question. Not just about price, but about impact. About where their food dollars go, and whether convenience is actually serving their communities, their neighbors, and the planet.

Last year, our partners at Big Spoon Roasters were asking that same question from the other side of the shelf.

For more than a decade, Big Spoon sold their nut butters through Whole Foods Market and the national distribution system. On paper, it looked like success: more stores, more visibility, more volume. But behind the scenes, the math started to crack.

Large grocery conglomerates operate at a scale that allows them to take razor-thin margins on certain products, sometimes as little as ten cents per unit. They can do this because they are backed by billions of dollars in capital and national volume. Losses on one product are offset elsewhere, often intentionally, as part of a much larger pricing strategy.

Small, independently owned businesses do not have that luxury.

How Big Grocery Breaks Pricing and Trust

For Big Spoon, national distribution meant producing more jars while earning less per jar, all while losing control over how their products were priced once they landed on shelves. Centralized pricing teams adjusted prices without coordination with the maker or local buyers. Over time, customers began seeing the same jar of Big Spoon nut butter priced very differently depending on where they shopped. One price at Whole Foods. Another at an independent retailer like The Produce Box. Another on Big Spoon’s own website.

The product never changed, but the perceived value did. And the confusion and frustration that followed landed on Big Spoon, even though they were no longer the ones setting the price. That same dynamic shows up on the retailer side.

At The Produce Box, every product we carry has to meaningfully contribute to paying a local team, maintaining our website, coordinating logistics, and getting food delivered to your door. Ten cents does not cover those costs. Pricing designed to win shelf wars does not sustain the people actually doing the work.

So when something costs more through a small retailer, it is not because anyone is padding margins. It is because the price reflects the real cost of doing business locally and responsibly, and because we are choosing a system where makers are not squeezed until something breaks.

When Scale Creates Hidden Costs

Pricing was only part of what made national distribution unsustainable for Big Spoon.

They also spent significant staff time disputing incorrect distributor chargebacks, a process that required documentation, follow-up, and weeks of back-and-forth. Every claim was eventually resolved in their favor, but that time came directly at the expense of production, innovation, and relationship-building.

Forecasting added another layer of strain. Products would be marked out of stock in some stores while sitting available at the warehouse, leading to frustration for both customers and retailers. Big Spoon had little ability to intervene inside a system they did not control.

These were not rare mishaps. They were built into the structure of national grocery distribution.

Why Independent Retail Works Differently

When Big Spoon decided to step away from national grocery and focus on independent retailers, it was not a rejection of growth. It was a decision to grow in a way that made sense for their values and their people.

We do not order Big Spoon through a distributor. We pay to send one of our drivers directly to their Durham warehouse to pick up nut butters made by their living-wage–certified team.
