Did you know that food in the conventional grocery store supply chain travels an average of 1,500 miles before it reaches your plate? That’s a lot of fuel — and a lot of emissions — just to get dinner on the table.

At The Produce Box, 80% of the items on our menu year-round come from within 200 miles of our Raleigh warehouse. That means:

We pick up directly from farms and artisan producers, using efficient, consolidated “farm run” routes, saving time and gas.
Local producers deliver straight to us, eliminating the cross-country trucking and multiple distribution hubs of the grocery model.
Even for non-local items like bananas and avocados, we source from local, family-owned distributors who share the same loading dock as us at the State Farmers Market. Oftentimes, our orders are driven right down the dock on a forklift— no trucking required.

And thanks to our smart routing software, our Neighborhood Ambassadors follow optimized routes that reduce the total mileage driven each week. Less driving = fewer emissions.

🌱 We Work with Farmers Committed to the Land

Most of our partner farmers are Certified Organic, Animal Welfare Approved, or practice Naturally Grown methods. That means:

Healthier, living soils maintained through composting, crop rotation, and cover cropping
Reduced or no use of synthetic, petroleum-based pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers
Biodiversity, pollinator habitats, and regenerative practices are baked into the farm’s daily operations

Take Firsthand Foods, for example. This Animal Welfare Certified meat supplier works with a network of small-scale livestock producers who together preserve over 9,000 acres of NC farmland for regenerative grazing and rotational crop production. That’s land that isn’t being paved over, sprayed with chemicals, or stripped of its nutrients. Instead, these pastures drawn down and sequester carbon from the atmosphere.

In the dominant food system, 30-40% of food goes to waste, often before it even reaches a grocery store shelf. That’s a lot of wasted water, energy, labor, and emissions.

We order based on historical sales data, so we buy only what we expect to sell — and nothing more.
Any unsold but still edible produce is donated weekly to a network of local churches and nonprofits with whom we’ve built multi-year relationships.
Because we’re local and nimble, we can pivot quickly to match supply with demand, keeping food out of landfills and into homes.
